Week 8 Part A: How to Expand Your Reach on Instagram by Using Hashtags

I think that visual media is essential for an artist in promoting their work. I decided to research 4 different artists with varying levels of success.

The first Artist I decided to research is Don Colley. Don Colley has 13.3K followers. He mostly posts images from his sketchbook. Don doesn't seem to really utilize short videos. His last post was one day ago. Don utilizes hashtags that pertain to his drawing such as the location the drawing took place as well as more artsy tags such as instaart, urbansketching, and sketching. He gets anywhere from 63 likes to over 700 depending on the drawing. I searched two different hashtags specifically drawyourday and pittartistpens and Don came up as an option on both.

The second Artist I decided to research is my oil painting teacher Alla Bartoshchuk. Alla has 2,931 followers. She mostly posts images and short videos of the particular painting she is working on. Her last post was six days ago. Alla hasn't been posting as much as she is preparing to birth her first baby. Alla utilizes hashtags that are more artistic terms such as figurativeart, portrait, fineart. Alla usually gets around 100- 500 likes on her photos. I searched a few hashtags but she didn't come up as an option.

The third Artist I decided to research is Dimitra Milan. Dimitra has 150K followers. She posts photos of completed paintings, works in progress and photos of herself and more recently her new baby. Her last post was one day ago. Dimitra utilizes hashtags specifically her name and other tags pertaining to her paintings. Dimitra usually gets around 400-5000 likes on her posts. I searched a couple hashtags and of course she came up as pretty much the only option under her name hashtag, and not really so much on the others I checked such as fineart and oilpainting

The fourth Artist I decided to research is Vanessa Lemen. Vanessa has 64.7K followers. She posts photos and short videos of completed paintings, works in progress, sketches and her pet cat. Her last post was two days ago. Vanessa utilizes hashtags on her posts such as artistsoninstagram, oilpainting and imaginativerealism. She usually gets around 100- over 2000 likes on her posts. I searched a couple of hashtags and she didn't come up as an option.

Overall it was very enlightening to see how other artists have utilized hashtags. I think the most successful is Don Colley. I think that putting local tags as well as tagging the specific type of artwork it is, which is something I have been trying to do. I just post inconsistently and I think that puts me lower on the list of options under hashtag searches. Maybe tags such as sanclemente, oilpainting, instaart and instaartist might be beneficial to use.
